ISPT presented us with the design challenge, that is, that their properties, specifically shopping centres, had been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their company supports the retirement funds of people so they wanted to create an environment that would give people a reason to return to their spaces. They knew it needed to be community building in order to emphasise a sense of belonging. Also, considering the importance of technology in the retail industry, the digital was briefed to be part of the speculative and future thinking solution.

To analyse the design context, we utilised the People, Places and Things model to identify all possible options we can aim to focus on for the project. We then employed taxonomy and ontology. Ontology is identifying connections, commonalities and their relationships and taxonomy is distinguishing hierarchy, structure and system. People, places and things is an example of ontology and then ranking them by our values was taxonomy. Finally, we used ontology again to curate the basis for 3 ideas.
We chose three case studies and analysed them based on our selection criteria. Our three selection criteria was: Innovation, Connection Building and Social Impact. This is a result of our assessment of the design challenge and context.
After cultivating 3 ideas, we presented them to ISPT in a pitch presentation with supporting posters. The result of the meeting was to combine idea 1 and 2 as they saw the value of the team building in idea 1 and education and imagination that comes with idea 2.
Moving into developing the final design document and the video prototype, we needed to make decisions on all aspects of the experience. Before creating the user journey, we did an exercise to expand our concept.
The video prototype is an expression of the entire experience. To capture all its elements, we envisioned the creatures and ecosystems that would exist in the experience. This brainstorm, alongside the user journey, were considered when creating the storyboard for the video.
The final design report was a 21 page document detailing the design process and solution. We provided a brochure with a condensed version of the final solution for our clients to take with them.
